Missed Open Enrollment? Special Enrollment Periods That Still Let You In
By Logan Steele · August 6, 2026 · 5 min read

Open Enrollment closed and you don't have coverage. That's not automatically the end of the conversation. A Special Enrollment Period (SEP) reopens the Marketplace for you — but only for 60 days, and only if something specific happened.
Events that open a 60-day window
- Losing job-based, COBRA, student, or a parent's coverage
- Marriage or divorce
- Having a baby, adopting, or placing a child in foster care
- Moving to a new ZIP code or county with different plans
- Losing Medicaid or CHIP eligibility
- Becoming a U.S. citizen or lawfully present resident
- A household income change that alters subsidy eligibility
The clock matters more than the event
Sixty days from the qualifying event — not sixty days from when you got around to it. For loss of coverage you can usually apply up to 60 days before the loss, which is the smarter move: it prevents a gap month. Apply after the fact and your start date typically slides to the first of the following month.
Have documentation ready
The Marketplace verifies most SEPs. Common proof: a letter from your employer or plan showing the coverage end date, a marriage certificate, a birth certificate, a lease or utility bill for a move, or a Medicaid termination notice. Upload it promptly — unverified SEPs get cancelled and the coverage voided.
What does not open a window
Voluntarily dropping coverage, failing to pay premiums, or simply deciding you'd like insurance now. Quitting COBRA early doesn't count either — but COBRA running out does.
- ✅ Medicaid and CHIP enroll year-round — check eligibility first.
- ✅ Short-term medical can bridge you to January.
- ✅ Mark the next Open Enrollment date and set a reminder.
If you think you had a qualifying event, don't guess at the date. Send me the details and I'll confirm your window before it closes.
Educational only. Marketplace rules, subsidy amounts, and plan availability change every year and vary by state — confirm current details before you enroll.
